Letter to the Red Post Parish

Hello!

It’s great to be here as your Vicar. I’m really enjoying finding my way around and becoming part of the villages here.  Thank you to all of you who have made us so welcome in the Red Post Benefice, both at services and when we’ve met you out and about.

My number one priority is getting to know you as people and as a community, so please do invite me to gatherings and events around the benefice.  I’ll come to as much as I can and before long I hope to have met with everyone who lives here.

I very much hope that you all feel that the church is part of the community – we’re here for all of you.  So, for instance, if you or someone you know is thinking about a Christening then please encourage them to get in touch.  The same is true for funerals – do tell the funeral director that we would regard it as a privilege to take the service.   And I hope that lots of you will want to get married or celebrate your relationship in one of the churches.  We’d love you to get married in church whenever that is possible, including people who don’t currently live in these parishes and people have been married previously.

Here’s an invitation for you!  Lent is a time for prayer and reflection both personally and as a community.  I’d like to invite you all to come and help us think about the future of the Church here.  We’ll meet weekly during Lent to: appreciate what Church is, investigate connections with the community, reflect on how we are called to enrich our community and suggest some possible priorities for the coming years.  When and where we’re meeting will be finalised shortly – do get in touch if you’d like to know more details.

If you’re looking for a book to read, the other Justin (Archbishop of Canterbury) has chosen “In God’s Hands” by Desmond Tutu as his Lent book this year.  Desmond Tutu is one of the greatest living Christian thinkers and leaders, is a Nobel Peace Laureate for his opposition to Apartheid and has been a huge influence on me personally.  I can highly recommend it!

With every good wish and blessing from your new Vicar,

Justin
